Flowers for Algernon
Charlie a 37 year old with a learning disability just wants to be smart. He becomes a test subject for a new operation that will supposedly triple his I.Q. of 68. In this operation he would be the first human to even get it. A mouse in the lab named Algernon has also had the operation. Before he can even get the operation he must do some test including racing Algernon to finish a maze. After he has the operation he is able to beat the mouse and becomes increasingly smart. He can read books way above the normal reading level for even his age. Then he starts to lose his new skills and forgets how to spell basic words and read hard books. Charlie has bad mood swing then Algernon dies. He loses his abilities and is eventually the same as he started out.
Even though he wanted to be smarter is it right to even try to do such things to a person? It's almost like saying he wasnt good enough the way he was and we need to change him. Just because he is a mental disabled person doesn't mean he he has to go through a whole operation just to be like everyone else. But at the same time he wanted this. He wanted to be smarter, and he wanted to go through with the operation. I think that there really isnt a right or wrong answer in this situation but both sides should be considered if this actually happened.
